Teachers have a day to get materials put together for homework. Oftentimes a student can get the makeup work/assignments by checking the teacher’s website and/or contacting another student from the class.

Competency Requirements

The Shawnee Mission School District requires that competency is achieved in four areas prior to graduation. These areas are reading, writing, math, and computers. Reading and math competency is achieved when a student earns an adequate score on the Iowa test of Educational Development. The Written competency is part of the Junior English curriculum. Computer competency is achieved by passing the Computer Applications class. Computer competency may also be completed by taking the computer competency test out that is offered several times each year after school. Students must sign up ahead of time to take this test.

Correspondence Classes

Students may receive high school credit by successfully completing out-of-district courses by correspondence or through out-of-district virtual courses from accredited institutions only. Prior approval must be secured through the student’s academic counselor and an official transcript of the completion from the accredited institution is required.

E School Information

The Shawnee Mission district offers two online courses. High school students can enroll in health education or American government. For more information, go the district website (www.smsd.org/parents) and look for the eSchool link, or contact Karen Faucher at 993-1800.

Enrollment

Enrollment occurs in January each year. The counselors make enrollment presentations in class by grade level. The counselors return to the class about a week later to sit down with each student individually to finalize their course selections. Enrollment dates are available in the Shawnee Mission East Calendar. It is imperative that students select their courses with great care. The number of staff required to teach the courses requested by the student body would result will result in the number of course sections we offer and teachers needed to fill the master schedule. Consequently, we do not make schedule changes unless there is an error or there is a physical reason a student cannot take a course they originally selected. We suggest that if you have questions about curriculum that you call your students counselor in November or December.

FERPA

Shawnee Mission school district is in complete compliance with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have transferred are "eligible students."

Home Schooled Credit Explanation

Students may receive credit based on the approval of the building principal for prior work completed at a non-accredited institution or home school. Please refer to page 45 of the High School Program Planning Guide for detailed information regarding the requirements for awarding this credit

IB Program

The International Baccalaureate program is a comprehensive and rigorous pre-university, two-year curriculum for academically talented and highly motivated students. Upon completion of the program, students will receive an IB diploma. The IB program requires that students complete a comprehensive sequence of courses, submit an extended essay, and perform community service and complete exams in six subject groups. Preparing for entry into the junior and senior level IB program is challenging for freshman and sophomores. Students will take honors and advanced placement courses, which provide in-depth study in English, social studies, math, international language and science. This preparation is essential for the rigorous curriculum. For more information, please refer to pages 41-42 of the High School Program Planning Guide or the IB website at www.shawneemissionib.com.

Peer Tutors

The Peer Tutor program at East has been in place for five years. Each year students are recommended by their teachers to become peer tutors. The students who are recommended are invited to attend a training session. All peer tutors complete and application and list the classes they are willing to tutor for other students. This is a voluntary program, not a paid program. The peer tutor applications are compiled in a notebook that is kept in the counseling office. If your student needs tutoring help in a subject area, he/she may come to the counseling office and write down the names and phone numbers of the tutors they need help from. It is the responsibility of the student seeking tutoring to contact the peer tutors.

Program Planning Guide

The district publishes a new Program Planning Guide each December. The courses listed in this guide encompass all the courses offered in the entire district. East student should refer to the paper list of courses available in the Counseling Office to look up the descriptions of the courses that are offered at East.

Information about curriculum planning, grading, considerations for college, athletics, and special education services can all be found in the back of the Program Planning Guide
