MAP - Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) are state-aligned computerized adaptive tests that accurately reflect the instructional level of each student and measure growth over time. The assessment itself is unique in that it adapts to the student's ability, accurately measuring what a child knows and needs to learn. In addition, MAP tests measure academic growth over time, independent of grade level or age. Most importantly, the results educators receive have practical application to teaching and learning.

PLAN – This is an optional test for sophomores and serves as a practice ACT test. It includes an academic and career component with test scores that are extremely helpful for academic as well as college planning. The PLAN test will be administered on the all-school testing day, October 17, 2007. Students may register by paying the $15.00 exam fee in the counseling office. For more information, check online at www.act.org

PSAT/NMSQT for Juniors – This test is a practice SAT Reasoning Test. It is especially recommended for juniors so they may become familiar with the testing format of the SAT Reasoning Test. In addition, juniors who take the test are automatically included in the National Merit Scholarship competition. The PSAT is administered to juniors on the all-school testing day, October 17, 2007 at a fee of $16.00. Students may register in the counseling office for this test. For more information, check online at www.collegeboard.com

PSAT for Sophomores – This test serves as practice for the PSAT as well as the SAT Reasoning Test. It is especially recommended for sophomores who are considering more selective colleges or are enrolled in honors level classes. It is administered to sophomores on Saturday, October 20, 2007 at a fee of $18.00. Students may register in the counseling office for this test. For FREE PSAT prep, go to http://www.eprep.com/courses/psat/register

ACT – The ACT is an achievement test that is used for college admissions. The counseling staff at SME recommends that students take the ACT in the spring of their junior year, as most students will score higher as a result of the course content gained during the entire year. The new version of the test, introduced in 2005, includes an optional writing section. The SME counseling staff recommends students plan to complete the writing portion of the test if they are unsure of their college choices. Students may check individual college requirements for testing on the college websites. Registration and fee payment are made directly to ACT. Paper copies of registration materials are available in the counseling office although registration can be completed online at www.act.org

SAT Reasoning Test – The SAT Reasoning Test, formerly the SAT I, is a reasoning and critical thinking test used for college admissions. The counseling staff at SME recommends that students take the SAT in the spring of their junior year, as most students will score higher as a result of the course content gained during the entire year. The new version of the test, introduced in 2005, includes a mandatory writing section. Registration and fee payment are made directly to College Board. Paper copies of registration materials are available in the counseling office although online registration is recommended at www.collegeboard.com

SAT Subject Test – The SAT Subject Tests, formerly the SAT II’s, are one-hour, achievement exams covering specific subject areas. A small number of highly selective colleges use the results for admissions decisions and/or determining appropriate course placement. Only students who are considering colleges that require these exams need to take them. Most students take the exams during the spring of their junior year or fall of their senior year, although timing should be dependent on when a student has completed the highest level of curriculum in the subject area. A student may take up to three, one-hour exams at a time. Registration and fee payment are made directly to College Board. Paper copies of registration materials are available in the counseling office although online registration is recommended at www.collegeboard.com

Advanced Placement Exams – Advanced Placement exams or “AP Exams” measure a student’s knowledge in specific, college level curricula. Although not required, only students who have prepared for the exam by taking an Advanced Placement course take the exam. Colleges may grant advanced placement or award college credit depending on a student’s score. Registration is completed through the counseling office by paying an exam fee of $84.00 per exam. All exams are administered during the first two weeks of May. For more information check online at www.collegeboard.com.
